It’s tough to get a patent these days. In my career as both an inventor and a registered US patent agent, I’ve seen the process for getting a patent become increasingly more difficult. It was never quite clear why. One can point to different policy changes, law changes, and court decisions, but I wasn’t sure that that these fully explained what was happening.

“Why is it taking so long to get my patent?” The answer may well be that you have a tough patent examiner.
It’s a struggle to get a mechanical patent. In the good old days, you wrote a patent, you filed a patent, and with maybe one or two rejections from the patent examiner, you got a patent.
